Taking the Constitution to the People - Amandasig Secondary School, Amandasig, Orchards

The Inclusive Society Institute has been making significant strides in Gauteng schools, actively engaging students and promoting democratic values. On Monday, 2 September 2024, a total of 104 learners from Amandasig Secondary School participated in the "Taking the Constitution to the People" workshop, which was facilitated by Mr Patrick Morathi, the Institute's representative in the Gauteng Province. This workshop aimed to deepen the students' understanding and appreciation of South Africa's democratic constitution, its history, structure, and the fundamental rights and responsibilities outlined in the Bill of Rights.

Through this interactive session, the learners were taken on a comprehensive journey, exploring the intricate process by which the current constitution was crafted, the guiding principles that shaped its development, and the pivotal role it plays in shaping the nation's governance and social fabric. The workshop delved into the Founding Provisions, which establish the foundational values and aspirations of the democratic state, as well as the Bill of Rights, which enshrines the fundamental human rights and freedoms that all citizens are entitled to. Importantly, the session also emphasized the concept of responsible citizenry, empowering the young participants to recognize their active role in upholding the constitution and contributing to the realization of a truly inclusive, equitable, and just society.

The Inclusive Society Institute's commitment to this initiative extends beyond a single event, as Gauteng Province, through its various Districts, will continue to roll out similar workshops in secondary schools across the region. By fostering a deeper understanding and engagement with the constitution, the Institute aims to cultivate a generation of informed, engaged, and civic-minded citizens who will shape the future of South Africa and uphold the democratic ideals that the country was founded upon.
